How Do I Add Images To My Pages?

By SiteThingy Administrator

There are several options available for adding graphics and images to the pages of your website. We will discuss them here.

Aside from the standard option to add a designated image to each new page via the "Upload Image" browse button, the very best way to add images to your page is by creating an Image Gallery to hold all the graphics used throughout your site.

To do this, login to your administrative pages and click on Home. Then click "Add Child Page." For our purposes, you will want to go through the same process as described in How Do I Add New Pages To My Site? but this time you will select Image Gallery for the Page Type. And you will want to check the Is Published check box, but leave the Is In Menu box unchecked. And that's all there is to it for creating the Image Gallery. Click the Submit Content button and it will save your changes and create the new page.

NOW you have a place to store all the images you want to upload and use in your site! It's really very cool!

This is TRICKY though! Since we didn't check the Is In Menu box, we have to get to the Image Gallery using a secret "back door!" On any page of your site, if you scroll down to the bottom of the page, on the left hand side you will see a small link called Site Map. Clicking on this link will take you to a display of ALL the pages on your site, in the menu or not. Click on Site Map anytime you want to access your Image Gallery. Please open a new tab or new window within the admin pages of your site and go to your Site Map now.

When you are logged in and viewing your Image Gallery (by the way, you can create as many image galleries as you want. More about this later!) you will notice that the Image Gallery is the only Page Type where the link titled "Add Image" is available to you. Everything else will look the same. So, to add a new image, just click "Add Image" and it will open up a new window. Really, all you need to do is click on the Browse button for the Upload Image field. Locate the image on your computer and click Submit Content. The system will automatically assign the image a name based on what you have called it on your computer. So, you don't need to re-name it, unless you really want to. Again, here you may choose to give it a sequence number or the system will assign one for you.

Once you have the images you want to use in your site uploaded to your Image Gallery, simply go to the Image Gallery and click on the image you want to use. Let's use the Glass of Wine photo for our example. This will open the page the image is located on.

You will notice just below the full image there is a hyperlink for the path to this particular image.

Simply copy this link. Go back to the page you were working on and click your mouse in the Details Area where you want to insert the picture.

Now, look at the icons available to the text editor...just above the details area. You will see a little yellow "picture" with a mountain scape and sun in it. It should be sixth in from the right on the middle row of icons.

Click this icon and it will open a pop-up window. Where it says "URL" at the top of the pop up window, click with your mouse and paste the url of the image you copied into this field.

(*NOTE - Alternatively, you MAY paste the url for an image stored at an online image service such as Photo Bucket or Flickr into this field, if you desire to do so.) Next, you will want to click into the Width box and immediately you will see the image you selected showing in the Preview Pane of the pop-up window. You may use the Width and Height boxes to resize the image a bit, if you like, but it's BEST to have the image already sized before you upload it.

Try entering a small number in the Border, HSpace and VSpace boxes to get a feel for how they adjust the look and placement of the image on the page.

Align - This is probably the most important of the options available in this image editor pop-up. Changing the Alignment of the picture will move it around on the page. Again, play with it to see what each option does so you become familiar with the options available to you.

Once you are done with the image editor pop-up click OK and that window will close. Now you may continue editing the page with text or more images. When you are satisfied, click Submit Content to save your changes.
